Chicken nuggets, crispy potato slices, salad
Good evening, from a very, very weary blogger.
Mum has been feeling very unwell since early this morning, which meant she woke me up every few minutes since early this morning. When I finally gave up and got up, mum switched to taking her misery out on me: there was crying, and shouting, and slamming doors. (The door took three attempts to slam to mum’s satisfaction, at which point she said “oops, how did that happen?” There seemed no good answer to that.)
I decided this was my cue to take mum’s urine sample to the GP, and then spent the next hour trying to coax mum into weeing into a plastic pot. Eventually I decided to just take what was there, grabbed my bag and crutches, and fled down to the village on an unusually busy community bus.
Sample dropped off – with the addition of some of the skin from my knuckles, the victim of the letterbox used to collect samples – I headed up to the community centre for 45 minutes of blessed peace, a cup of coffee, and an Island-portioned slice of banana flapjack.

A banana flapjack, I’m delighted to report, is like the best bits of banana bread (squidgy and fruity) mixed with the best bits of a flapjack (chewy, sweet, oaty). I will be making one myself, probably in the next week or so as we have a lot of bananas atm thanks to mum buying a bunch while out with Lady Friday yesterday, at the same time as another bunch was being delivered by Tesco.
Then home, to mum being sweetly apologetic for “going a bit too far”. At least, she was sweet as long as the carer was here, then reverted to type as soon as she left.
It felt like mum was interrupting me every few minutes, so I decided to actually record every interruption because I thought maybe I was just tired and irritable, and not being fair to mum.
That means I now know that, between 14.07 and 17.00, mum interrupted me – walking into my room, summoning me to help with something that didn’t actually need doing, or just shouting at me from the living room – 59 times. That’s about every three minutes.
After all that, she told me that she “really missed me” and “wanted to spend some time with me”. When I pointed out that she hadn’t gone more than 10 minutes without seeing me all afternoon, she announced that she had been deliberately leaving me in peace because I looked busy.
That mum genuinely believes that this ⬆️ is leaving me alone beggars belief. No wonder I’m permanently exhausted.
Dinner was about as basic as it gets: chicken nuggets (technically they’re chicken breast chunks, but they’re nuggets by any other name) with crispy potato slices and salad. Mum complained all the way through it, and all the way through the apple pie I served afterwards, and has only stopped now because she’s watching Strictly.
I think I have about 10 minutes until the programme ends and the complaining starts again. Wish me luck, please: I think I’m really going to need it.
