Veggie fingers, chips and salad; apple strudel and custard

Today has been another difficult day. Some of the many lowlights:

  • I went off to have my flu jab, negotiating the usual morning slalom of complaining and whimpering to get out of the house. At which point the heavens opened and I – and everyone else who was scheduled for that time – arrived at the clinic lightly dripping.
  • Little Ms Lazy was today’s carer so I laid out a plan of what I needed her to do, including boiling the kettle to provide warm water for mum to wash in. Mum refused to wash, and started crying for me to “tell her no”, calling me by my late sister’s name. 😬
  • The carer offered mum a cheese salad sandwich with mayonnaise, to which mum said “oh, that sounds nice, thank you”. If I was to offer the same thing, mum would say “urgh, no, you know I don’t like that sort of thing”. (I ended up eating the second half of her sandwich for my lunch as mum didn’t want it, but my point stands.)
  • Mum spent the rest of the day complaining: it’s cold, her teeth hurt, she’s sore down below, she keeps needing to wee, won’t I help her? It got very irritating by about lunchtime, and I still had the rest of the day to go.
  • This afternoon mum complained more than ever that she was sore. I told her to put on her new, bigger knickers. She refused, so I told her that, in that case, I didn’t want to hear another word of complaint from her. She screamed, slammed my bedroom door into my side table, knocking everything onto the floor, including my water cup, and stormed off.

I surprised myself by losing it: I shouted “NO! I am not having that. Get a towel to mop that up.” She did, and also put on her new knickers, and then cheered up. I did not feel cheerful.
  • It is indeed cold inside. And wet and windy outside. Usually I like this sort of weather, as an opportunity to curl up with a book and a cat, but mum won’t let me read and Suki won’t come out of hiding. 😪

For dinner I threw some veggie fingers and chips onto a baking tray, and served the resulting beige things with salad. The apple strudel is currently turning to a similar shade of beige in the oven, ready to be served with cream for mum and custard for me. We need a bowl of something warm on a night like this.

And so goodnight, again. I’ll see you tomorrow, if the Isle of Wight doesn’t blow away overnight.
