Cheese and leek bake with bread

A slightly better day today, thankfully. Mum still refused to get up until I coaxed and chivvied her into it, then made a big display of helplessness to get me running around after her, but this afternoon she settled down to watch some horse racing and let me do some work / games on my laptop.

I did a bit of online shopping – tablets and underwear liners for mum, some overpriced sweet treats for me – and snuggled with Suki until it was time to cook dinner. The moment I started to cook, though, mum suddenly developed an agonising pain in her eye.

I told her to get the eye drops.

She couldn’t find the eye drops.

I went and got the eye drops.

She couldn’t get them out of the bottle.

I went and took the lid off the bottle for her.

She couldn’t remember how to put drops in her eye.

I told her, then demonstrated, then demonstrated again, then demonstrated again. She kept doing it wrong. I threw my hands up in despair.

Her eye still hurts, and I’m apparently being unhelpful. 🤷‍♂️

What are you looking at?

Dinner was meant to be a recipe I found online, for a bacon, leek and pearl barley casserole, but at the last minute I decided I couldn’t face the inevitable “I don’t think I’ll like this” and changed the plan to leeks in cheese sauce.

As we were dishing up, I spotted a red-legged partridge sitting on our fence. These pretty little birds are raised and released for shooting, and there are always a few that end up in local gardens. This one seemed as interested in us as we were in it, once I assured it that we were eating a strictly vegetarian dinner!

Now I have to get through until bedtime, hopefully with minimal repeats of mum’s endless list of complaints. I hope tomorrow goes as (relatively) smoothly.
