Mediterranean vegetable quiche with salad

I regret to inform you that I have been found wanting as a care provider. Mum wants it to be cooler for Lady Friday’s visit tomorrow, and I informed her that I can’t control the weather. A disgraceful refusal to provide what my employer demands, I’m sure you’ll agree.

In her most pathetic ‘little old lady’ voice, mum said “but you will try to help, won’t you?”

I pinched the bridge of my nose, sighed aloud, and replied “what do you think I do all day, mum?”

Thankfully, for once mum took the hint and retreated. I know she doesn’t always intend to be annoying, but she’s so very good at it.

Earlier in the day, in the latest bout of her ongoing war against flies, mum managed to kill one. Then came in to show me the dead fly in her hand. Just… why, mum?!

Luckily we had a cover cleaner – a pseudo-Lil – come in today, and she cleaned under the cupboards so has hopefully disposed of whatever the flies were breeding in. Several times, I heard mum making the sort of passive-aggressive ‘helpful’ comments she usually directs towards me:

  • “do you want me to take out this bit of rubbish?” (Subtext: because you’re not removing it fast enough for my liking.)
  • “you’re doing a lot of work in the bathroom” (Subtext: hurry up!)
  • “there’s a lot of water on the floor: do you want me to try drying it?” (Subtext: how dare you make my floor wet while washing it?!)

It was both interesting and mildly depressing to hear mum’s behaviour directed at someone other than me. She never talks to her friends like that: only to people employed to provide a service. And me.

Shortly after pseudo-Lil left, mum just came into my room to inform me that “we’ve got a big problem in the kitchen”, but couldn’t find the words to explain what was wrong. She just kept coming back until I told her to show me the problem.

So what was it? A leak? The freezer breaking down again? Something wrong with Suki? No. It was… a cupboard door that hadn’t shut properly. Moving Henry the hoover approximately 1 inch to the right fixed the problem, as mum would have known if she had tried to fix the problem rather than hassling me until I did it for her.

Groceries were delivered this afternoon, so we have a fridge stuffed full of things to eat. Finding myself with not a lot of energy or motivation, I opted for a Mediterranean vegetable ‘tart’ (actually a quiche, but mum won’t eat it if I call it that) and salad.

Or at least mum had salad, then sealed the bag and put it away. I couldn’t be bothered to get it out again, so I just had cherry tomatoes and some chilli cheese potato salad.

Then we had strawberry cheesecake, and now it’s tv, hopefully some Suki snuggles, until it’s time to retreat to bed.

As always, goodnight, and I’ll see you tomorrow.
