Sweet chilli chicken, crispy potato slices, salad
My day today began very early indeed, but for once I didn’t mind because it was Suki waking me up. She jumped up on to my bed and settled beside my pillow for a long session of scritches and snuggles. Eventually she settled down in the curve of my body, exactly where my soul-cat Isis used to lie every night.
I went back to sleep and woke up again at a more sensible hour with nothing but a thick dusting of tabby fur on my pillow to show that I hadn’t dreamed the whole thing.
Mum has been unusually lucid all day, even recognising that her headache and stomach discomfort were caused by anxiety. At one point she made a joke about an minor incident with her mouthwash last night, showing that she clearly remembered what happened.
I know I keep harking on the subject, but whatever is wrong with mum, I really don’t believe it’s Alzheimer’s. Her short-term memory is often, as in this case, absolutely fine, and she sometimes – although by no means always – has more insight into her situation than is common with people with Alzheimer’s.
What she definitely does have is anxiety. The news that I am going out without her tomorrow triggered the aforementioned anxiety, although without the drama and threats of self-harm that accompanied my last attempt to leave the house. What she will be like tomorrow, when I actually go to leave the house… well, we’ll see.
For dinner I cooked some sweet chilli chicken, which mum enjoyed despite it being noticeably spicy, with her favourite crispy potato slices. Now she’s eating ice cream, despite it hurting her bad tooth, while I finish this before going to see if there’s anything sweet left that mum hasn’t eaten. She has already expressed disappointment that I didn’t produce a proper dessert today.
And on that note I will leave you. See you tomorrow, y’all.
