Sticky sausages, smoky cabbage, and mash
Mum and I have finally agreed that we really want to get a cat very soon.
We were going to go over to the shelter last Saturday but, although mum was up for going, I felt unwell so we stayed at home.
Today I was up for going but mum felt unwell, so we stayed at home.
One of these days we’ll get our timing together and actually go second-hand cat shopping.
By lunchtime mum felt well enough to leave the house for a short while. As we were once again facing the existential crisis of not having a Radio Times (I have asked them to investigate why, for the second time in a month, the copy mum has paid to be delivered to her hasn’t been) I persuaded her to go down to Tesco with me.
We didn’t get much, as we don’t need much now we get most things delivered, but at least we got out. By which I mean, at least I got out, as mum at least has church visits to take her outside these four walls once a week or so.
Not that she’ll be going tomorrow, in all likelihood, as she’s still feeling very off-colour: mum finds the concept of a chronic illness quite hard to cope with, as she can’t accurately judge if her symptoms are improving or not. I keep telling her she just has to be patient, that she can’t expect things to improve immediately, but as far as she’s concerned this has been going on forever already.
And so, dinner. I asked mum to pick something for dinner, and she shouted “chicken!” I said that was just rude, which made her laugh, so I pretended I hadn’t, just for a moment, genuinely thought she was calling me names. 😬
Stood in front of the fridge in Tesco, though, she instead opted for sausages. I put them into a Simply Cook recipe for sticky sausages, which I served with deconstructed paprika colcannon (ready-made mash topped with paprika-spiced cabbage) and the smoky date ketchup that was part of the kit.
I thought it was all a bit sweet and one-note, but mum really liked it, which is all that matters.
About this and pretty much everything else, really. 🤷♂️
