Apple doughnut / Hunter’s chicken, green beans, mash
Taste test: Graces Bakery apple doughnut
Well, it was never going to be bad, was it?
Long-time readers will know of my fondness for Isle of Wight business Graces Bakery – their chicken mayo roll was the thing that persuaded me to start eating again when I was hospitalised this time last year, and I will always be grateful for that alone.

Their doughnuts never fail to impress, and this one is no exception. It’s big – almost the size of my face – with delicious, fluffy doughnut filled with proper chunks of cooked apple: no vaguely fruit-flavour goo here. Lots of it, too, as I discovered by it spilling out over my hand in a messy but tasty sort of way.
The icing on top is sweet (obviously), but balances the slightly sour apple filling beautifully. I told mum they’re horrible and not to eat the other one, but for some reason she didn’t believe me.
Another ‘would highly recommend’, naturally.
The rest of the day passed in an endless loop of mum complaining her head hurt, me suggesting remedies, and mum refusing them. Late in the afternoon, mum asked me, in all seriousness, if I could speak to a doctor about her health problems.
What does she think I’ve been doing all this time?!
Dinner was hunter’s chicken (chicken topped with bacon, cheese, and bbq sauce), which mum used to love but hadn’t had in long enough that I was a bit concerned that she might have changed her mind.
Thankfully she hadn’t: her first bite was accompanied by a satisfied “mmm”. I didn’t tell her the mashed potato came from a packet (Idahoan brand) until after she’d cleared her plate and, to be fair, you’d never know it. They’re properly potato-y, and buttery, and good enough that I went back for seconds.
Tomorrow, if mum isn’t feeling absolutely terrible, I might try and arrange a trip over to the local branch of Cats Protection to see one of the three pairs of cats currently looking for a new home. One of the pairs is two ginger cats, which is exactly what mum said she wanted, but now she’s acting like she doesn’t want cats and I’m forcing her into it. I’m just hoping that coming face-to-face with two adorable orange cat faces will change her mind. ๐ค๐
