Sausage roll with leftover noodles

NB: the headline image is a stock photograph and not what I ate for dinner. It looks so delicious I’m going to go hunting for a recipe to recreate it, though.

There’s not much to say about today.

As usual, I got up the fourth or fifth time that mum woke me up to ask if I was awake. (I think mum may have been a cat in a previous life.) Mum had a headache, so I suggested that a warm hot water bottle on the back of her neck might help.

Mum tried it for a whole 30 seconds before deciding that she’d rather go out in the garden. Which is fine, but I suspect that next time I suggest a hot water bottle she’ll tell me that it doesn’t help, on the basis of those 30 seconds.

I had some breakfast and a cup of coffee (the only one I had today, I’ve just realised, which isn’t like me), then set up a spreadsheet headache diary for me to complete on mum’s behalf.

Then I did some work on the cookbook – it now has a contents page, and sections, and some of the sections have recipes in them! 😮 It’s a very long way from completion, but it’s great to have achieved something.

This afternoon I booked a long overdue haircut for mum and me, which rapidly became a fairy story called Goldilocks and the Three (bar)Bears (sorry). The first appointment I tried to book was with the wrong hairdresser, the second was too late in the day (6.30), the third too soon (this Saturday). Atm, the third is the one we’re going with, but if mum wakes up with a headache again tomorrow then I’ll probably have to cancel it.

I booked myself in for an appointment next week, by myself, which mum is already worrying about. I must admit that I’m quite looking forward to an hour or so on my own, even if I have to go to the hairdresser’s to get it. (I hate going to the hairdresser’s: sitting in a small room smelling of weird chemicals, making small talk while accepting extended physical contact from a stranger, just doesn’t strike me as a good time.)

Dinner was meant to be cheese and vegetable pies, but both mum and I searched every drawer of both freezers, twice, without locating them. Goodness knows where they’ve vanished to.

Instead we had sausage rolls. Mum had salad with hers and proclaimed it “yum”; I had mine with the noodles leftover from yesterday’s dinner, as I was right that mum wouldn’t want to eat them at lunchtime.

For afters I had Halo Top brand cookie dough ice cream: it’s low in calories so you can eat a load of it without feeling too guilty. It’s nice, but the calorie count is kept low by including fewer and smaller pieces of cookie dough. Given that the cookie dough is the whole point – otherwise you’d just buy vanilla ice cream – this is a bit disappointing.

Which reminds me: on the advice of one Pineapple (or whatever we eventually we’d call ourselves), I tried some vegan Magnums, in blueberry cookie flavour. They’re amazing – you would truly never know it wasn’t dairy ice cream. They’re no competition for my favourite Snickers ice cream bars, but I’ll definitely buy them again next time they’re on special offer.

And with that I will end. Once again I’m so weary I’m slipping into that state where nothing feels quite real, despite having done very little today.

G’night, everyone.
