Hot cross buns, savoury and sweet; fish goujons, stirfried veg in garlic and sweet chilli sauce, golden rice

Apologies for the lack of a post yesterday. I would like to say I have a good reason for not writing, but I honestly just didn’t have the energy. By way of apology I intended to do a quick review post this morning, of Tesco’s savoury hot cross buns, but then a couple of mum’s friends came round to fix a fallen fence, bringing their very lively dog, Cassie, with them, and in my “doggo!” excitement I completely forgot.

One a penny, two a penny, two packs for £3.

So, better late than never: the savoury buns (at the back of the plate, flavoured with cheddar and red leicester) are hot cross buns only because they have a cross on top – they’re just soft, cheesy rolls. The cheese flavour is fairly subtle and best appreciated eaten with just a bit of butter. Mum didn’t care for them, but I rather liked them. Fwiw, the sweet ones – extra fruity, from Tesco’s almost ridiculously wide range of flavours (rhubarb and custard, caramel and chocolate, apple and cinnamon…) – are very good indeed, and I’ve ordered some more for delivery tomorrow.

For dinner tonight, I opted for something very simple, as repeatedly throwing a stick for an inexhaustible dog (she’s a border collie, so doesn’t know the meaning of “enough” when it comes to playing) left me with all the exhaustion she didn’t have. So we had fish goujons, stirfried vegetables, and golden vegetable rice, all frozen from Iceland. The fish and veg I’ve reviewed before; the rice is surprisingly good for something that I had never considered getting in frozen form. I suspect the ‘savoury’ is mostly salt, but it has peas and red pepper to make it feel healthy, it tastes nice, and has properly separate grains (i.e. not mush), and I think I’ll get it again.

Dessert was going to be some of the giant cookie mum got for her birthday, but she changed her mind and I cba to make anything else now. If I could easily get out to the big freezer I might raid the box of Oreo ice cream sandwiches (highly recommended, btw), but I can’t, so I won’t. At least I don’t have to throw a stick again for a while, which is a great relief, much as I love dogs. Sorry, Cassie.

“Throw the stick, throw the stick, throw the stick!
