Faggots, chips and gravy; chocolate brownie ice cream
Short post tonight because it’s late and my stomach isn’t thanking me for the pint of chocolate brownie ice cream I ate earlier. (Aren’t I lactose intolerant? Yes, I am, which is why my digestive system is so unhappy rn. 😬)
Self-inflicted digestive issues aside, today has been a better day1: the weather was decent so mum got out in the garden and did some pruning, (re)discovering some purple spring crocuses in the process. Gardening always puts mum in a good mood, which I love to see.
I spent my day, or at least a significant chunk of it, in conversation with the local Job Centre about my benefits claim. I have committed to “job searching activities” which, as I’m still signed off work, amount to nothing more than the volunteering role I have already signed up for. In exchange, the DWP won’t sanction the benefits I haven’t yet been awarded, which I guess is nice of them?
Tomorrow is grocery delivery day, which meant tonight’s dinner was a “what have we got in the freezer?” special: mussels in white wine (Iceland) for mum, faggots in gravy (Mr Brain’s) for me, with oven chips and peas with both. I can’t comment on the mussels as I didn’t try them, although I did taste the sauce and it was very salty. That made it a natural counterpart to the faggots, which mostly tasted of black pepper. They had a mushy texture and gelatinous gravy: if I had tried these first I think I would think I dislike faggots, so I count myself as fortunate that I’ve tried and liked the real thing.
After that I was still hungry, which is a foolish state in which to approach an unopened tub of ice cream, as that’s how I end up eating the lot and regretting it. It was really good ice cream, though, and I can recommend it to anyone with more sense than me, which is just about everyone.
Tomorrow’s dinner will be more substantial as the grocery order (which doesn’t include chocolate brownie ice cream) will arrive mid-afternoon. Tomorrow’s post will also be more substantial, also due to the lack of ice cream. See you then!
- If you’re not a Facebook follower and are wondering what I’m referring to, mum had a bad day yesterday which meant I did too. ↩︎
