Minted lamb with potatoes and mixed veg with mint butter; coffee sponge pudding with ice cream

There’s not much to report for today, after this morning’s bank card snafu. The groceries arrived, earlier than scheduled as the delivery driver had seen that there was a problem with the payment and came early to make sure we had time to sort it out without missing our delivery slot. (Which reminds me that I must look for any “review your driver” option so I can let his employer know he did good.)

Apart from that, some clothes I ordered online yesterday arrived, less than 24 hours after I placed the order, I had a phone call from the job centre about my benefits claim, less than 24 hours after applying, and Storm Éowyn, heralded for the past 24 hours, hasn’t arrived (yet).

Yes, I know it needed gravy. Unfortunately I realised that just a little too late to be useful.

For dinner we had minted lamb, from Sainsbury’s, and much better than the Iceland equivalent we had the other week as these were all meat and no bone, and good tender meat at that, even being very slightly overcooked (my mistake – I lost track of time and left them a minute or two too long, which is more than enough to be a problem when the meat is this thin). To go with it were the last of the hasselback potatoes (still tasteless and with chewy, rather than crispy, skins – I won’t be buying them again) and mixed veg with mint butter (which sounds fancy but was just a spoonful of butter and a bit of mint sauce stirred into the microwaved frozen veg).

Pudding was the titular eatable coffee: a Colombian Coffee Sponge Pudding which is so sodden with coffee caramel sauce it’s almost drinkable, and with a smell which instantly reminded me of mum’s coffee cake (still the best I’ve ever tasted, and now on my “must try to recreate” list). Mum said it was a bit too sweet, but only after she had eaten most of her portion, and I thought it had just enough coffee bitterness to make it utterly delectable. It’s a limited edition product, so I’m going to have to do another Sainsbury’s order sometime soon to stock up on them before they go. (They’re not on my list of things to make myself as I made caramel once and swore I would never do anything so terrifying again.)

Tomorrow I will try to persuade mum we can open the box of chocolate biscuits I bought in order to get our total bill high enough for me to use the voucher that prompted me to order from Sainsbury’s in the first place, or maybe the single variety bar I bought for mum to test against her usual favourite from Tesco, as part of my continuing education in the wonderful world of chocolate. Education never tasted so good.
