Carrot soup, sandwiches, etc

Firstly, some really good news: mum is going home tomorrow! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I only got notified of this in a phone call from the hospital at around 4pm today, leading to a scramble of phone calls to make sure someone will be around when mum gets home, and some tearul phone calls from mum because she doesn’t fully grasp that she’s going home and just knows that things are changing again, but I’m confident she will be much less sad and confused when back in her own home.

Meanwhile I will stay here and eat and write reviews: this, of course, is my third review of the day and one I probably won’t bother with for future meals off the supper trolley as they’re all pretty much the same, varying only in the details.

Such as the soup flavour: today’s was a very good carrot and coriander, thick and almost creamy despite containing no cream, fragrant with coriander seed and sweet with carrot and – I think – some onion. I was surprised but selfishly pleased to learn that I’m one of the few residents to regularly partake of the soup option so, on days when I’m not still pretty much full of roast dinner, seconds of soup are nearly always going to be available. Served tonight, at my request, in a mug, as it’s far safer and less messy than a bowl and spoon when my hands are still only intermittently under my complete control.

Sandwiches: egg mayo – sadly back to the sparse fillings of my first night here – and ham and coleslaw – the thinnest of ham and cheapest of vinegary coleslaw. One of the people I ate lunch with mentioned that they could have gone on a cruise for the cost of their two week respite break here: I don’t know where the money is going, but it’s not on the food on the trolley of an evening.

Cheese and onion crisps, which I clearly didn’t need but I’m still revelling in the joy of eating crunchy things; a strawberry yoghurt – and if there’s one thing I have gained from my stay in hospital it’s a renewed appreciation for a good yoghurt; and a pear (only two left now ๐Ÿ™).

Scores:

  • Soup: 10/10 – a really unimprovable bit of soup.
  • Sandwiches: 4/10 – which is the lowest score I’m prepared to give something I finished eating.
  • Overall (as I’m not going to score things that come ready-prepared in a packet): 7/10, which seems fair to me.

And so (in a few hours, anyway), to bed. Sleep tight, don’t let the bedbugs bite – and if they do, call a pest controller. ๐Ÿ˜‰
